Bears fans are notorious for their impatience with new quarterbacks. Just ask Cade McNown, who became so unpopular so quickly that coach Dick Jauron was leery of playing him in Soldier Field.

It's unsure yet how much slack new quarterback Kordell Stewart will be cut after being handed the No. 1 job that formerly belonged to Jim Miller. Miller was a limited athlete but a popular player among fans and teammates because of his mental and physical toughness and selflessness. He was a regular Joe, lunch-bucket type whom fans could relate to and players could rally around.

Stewart's athleticism upgrades a position that has usually been a disappointment in recent years because of inconsistency and a high rate of turnover.
