Anyone who's ever seen those huge green animals gracing large estate gardens can grasp the time and effort required to create topiaries from shrubs.

Trimming giant bushes or trees, though, isn't the only route to adding whimsical greenery to the garden.

Topiaries built on wire frames stuffed with moss can grow a wide variety of vines or creeping plants and give the same look - just on a much smaller scale.

Karen Thomson of Barrington simplified the process for topiary novices who get woozy at the thought of primping pruned privets. Through her business, Thomson Topiaries, she offers classes on how to create the living sculptures and sells kits online that include everything but the plants needed to make bounding bunnies or crouching cats that are usually 2 feet tall or less.
