Six little-known Republicans are vying for the chance to represent their party next fall against incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden.

None of them has held public office. And all the candidates got into the race in the final days - in some cases final hours - before the March 9 filing deadline kicked in after no GOP heavyweight surfaced to take on the incumbent Wyden.

Dan Lavey, a Portland-based public-affairs consultant, said few of the state's Republican insiders were doing much hand-wringing about the lack of more accomplished GOP politicians or otherwise viable candidates to challenge Wyden.
