SPRINGFIELD - Owned and operated by the city since its creation in 1981, the Springfield Museum may be on its way to becoming a separate nonprofit organization operating in a municipal building.

That's a polite way of saying the cash-strapped city doesn't want to pay to run the museum anymore.

Starting last year, the City Council began dissolving its financial support of the museum, hoping to completely cut the full-time museum director's position within four years.

That would make the museum, which drew 8,000 visitors last year, similar to Eugene's Jacobs Gallery, operated inside the city-owned Hult Center by a private nonprofit group since Eugene...
