Voters should tend to business
Our city is in the midst of a dire business exodus. As another Eugene employer, Glory Bee Foods, decides to depart our tax borders (Register-Guard, April 20) for better digs nearby, we have to acknowledge the impact that city government has on attracting and maintaining business tax dollars.
Businesses are a vital source of municipal revenues, and the city should, as directed by voters, help businesses establish themselves and grow. Too many local businesses have been closed of late, further squeezing the local economy and eroding some of the local flavor we enjoy as residents.
Growth is mandatory for a healthy city budget, and the leaders we elect next month will shape our city for years to come. In past years, the city has positioned itself as a champion of business by doling out tax exemptions to qualifying businesses. Tomorrow's elected leaders need to embrace the notion that business success locally is a sign of a robust economy and is mandatory for continuing operations.
Voters' pamphlets have been issued, but the system only works if enough people use it. There are important decisions to be made on state and national levels as well, but right now, our city's administration needs our attention.
