The American Lung Association this week named Eugene-Springfield as the fifth-worst urban area in the nation this year for short-term pollution caused by tiny, airborne particles.

And the group, in its "State of the Air: 2004" report, also said Lane County was the seventh-worst county for short-term particle air pollution in the three-year period ending in 2002.

These at least superficially damning numbers elicited collective bafflement from local and state air quality officials. They say the American Lung Association has miscalculated, and that Lane County's particulate air pollution isn't nearly that bad.
