The Harrison County Development Commission is contemplating the acquisition of a megasite for future industrial park development.

"Right now, although we have almost 4,000 acres of industrial park property, the largest piece I can put together that is contiguous is about 150 acres," said Michael Olivier, executive director, Harrison County Development Commission. "A megasite is 500 or more acres. What you are doing is positioning yourself to have that many acres tied up that can be offered for a large-scale project."

None of the new auto assembly plants that have located in the South in recent years have chosen sites below Interstate 20, as the industry prefers inland sites. But Olivier said there is potential for Harrison County to attract second and third tier component manufacturing facilities that would serve plants in Mexico, Central and South America, as well as parts of the U.S.
