They call it the helium pole. But the pole of blame is a more appropriate name. In this team-building exercise, members are asked to connect tent poles into one long piece, and with it resting across their index fingers, set it on the ground in unison. But it's no simple task because the natural instinct is to raise the pole and the exercise can easily wind up as a finger-pointing fiasco.
"This is the one exercise that brings out a lot of conflict," said Ellen Thompson, co-owner of Experience Works and Mountain Grove at Cloudland B&B, a team-building program and retreat in Cloudland, Ga.
