Industrial maintenance training is very important to manufacturers since maintenance technicians are the workers who keep the equipment running. A continuing problem has been giving the workers time off to attend off-site training.

But now several community colleges in Mississippi have partnered with PRIMEDIA Workforce Learning's online program called PRIMEed to allow industrial maintenance technicians to upgrade their skills at their own pace and on their own schedule without necessarily leaving the workplace except for testing.

Roger Whitlock, director of workforce development, East Central Community College (ECCC), said 62 customers who are technicians at plant locations throughout the area are currently enrolled in PR1MEed.

"It is great to be able to perform outreach service with instruction that addresses the skills and knowledge needed in their technical manufacturing environment," Whitlock said. "It eliminates the need to travel...
