Usually when a business invests money, it is with a clear understanding of the return on investment (ROI). With workforce training, how can you measure the ROI from improving the skills of workers, managers and executives?

For Double G Coatings in Jackson, the payback for OSHA safety training is that the company has completed nearly seven years of work without a lost-time accident.

"We feel like that is an immediate payback just in terms of workman's compensation savings," said Mike Meadows, plant manager of Double G Coatings, which employs 80 team members. "The cost of workman's compensation insurance can be a big burden."

Meadows said another benefit from workforce training is a better-motivated workforce.

Defensive driving savings

The City of Vicksburg also credits workforce training such as defensive driving classes with reducing workers' compensation claims and premiums.

Tommy Horn, safety director for the City of Vicksburg, said they offer an average of one defensive driving course per month. Police and firemen who have had an accident are required to take the...
