Many human resource professionals are having a difficult time finding qualified entry-level workers who possess the basic reading, writing and reasoning skills needed for today's workplace. In some cases, employers must complete the basic training that they believe high schools and technical colleges fail to provide.

"The first problem is finding semi-qualified people," said Harold Ingram, president of PerforMax Inc., a medical staffing service in Jackson. "A major difficulty is that a high school and sometimes even a college degree is not an indicator of the skills a person should have. As an example, you would think that someone with a high school degree and a degree from one of the local technical colleges would be able to alphabetize. Let me assure you that is a bad assumption. For entry-level people with such credentials, I have them alphabetize a set of 30 pages with the names highlighted on the page, write one paragraph and read a paragraph out loud. It really shouldn't take 20 to 30 minutes to alphabetize 30 sheets of paper."
