The next few months will be crucial in the development of South Africa's highly innovative passively-safe pebble bed modular reactor, and therefore pivotal in the future development of nuclear power as a whole.

The recent receipt of a "positive record of decision" on the environmental impact assessment for both the 125 MWe demonstration reactor plant at Koeberg and the demonstration fuel fabrication plant at Pelindaba (see this month's news) is of course an important step in the right direction. It marks, according to the technology's developers, "the end of the detailed feasibility phase of the project." But assuming there are no successful appeals lodged in the 30 days following the records of decision--which, by the way, seem to be dependent on finalisation of nothing less than a national nuclear...
