In Southern California, summer doesn't really start until the Fourth of July, but unlike most places, it continues with warm sunny days through mid-October. I grew up in a beach community, so it seemed like it took forever for summer to arrive each year. Then, early in July, the cloud cover would burn off and the sun was bright. But, the best part of summer's arrival was the advent of hamburger season.

Recently on a sunny afternoon, I returned to my childhood home of Oceanside and went in search of the hamburgers of my youth. I wasn't looking for franchise fast food burgers--I wanted a real hamburger with all the trimmings, the kind that can only be found in a small beach community cafe.
