Pediatric dentist Dr. Howard Dixon swears kids go wild for his place.

No wonder. He's got an arsenal of toys that could make even adults love the dentist.

Eight PlayStation 2 game consoles to entertain youngsters while they wait and a slew of Disney and other "non-violent" flicks to calm kids' nerves during dental treatments are just some of the perks Dixon offers at hi "kid-friendly" Sorrento Valley clinic.

Pediatric dentists, or pediadontists, like Dixon after dental school have finished two or three years of specialized training to treat children.

But there aren't many.

And the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry forecasted this health care specialty will see an even greater shortage of providers in many areas despite growing patient need.

Of the 142,000 dentists in the United States, 3,800 are pediatric dentists with some states having fewer than 10, according to academy statistics.
