Article Excerpt American Technology Corp., the Sabre Springs-based developer of specialized audio technology, conducted a stock sale recently, raising about $10 million from several institutional investors including Vertical Ventures Investments, Special Situations Funds, and SDS Merchant Fund.
This is the first time ATC, founded in 1980, has attracted major institutional investors and could be a sign it's turning the comer from research and development into commercialization.
The equity funding entailed the sale of 1.8 million shares of common stock and warrants for 454,547 shares. ATC was previously financed from friends and family, and convertible stock debentures, and has not obtained any venture financing, said spokesman Robert Putnam.
Founded by local inventor and entrepreneur Elwood "Woody" Norris, ATC is making waves lately with its patented technology called HyperSonic Sound.
The technology allows sound waves to be accurately transmitted over distances much like lasers can concentrate light beams.
