At the January 2004 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the summit's executive chairman, Klaus Schwab, asked US Vice-president Dick Cheney if he considered his country to be an 'empire'. Predictably, Cheney denied Blowback author Chalmers Johnson's thesis of a US 'empire of bases' and apparently dismissed the Pentagon's own foreign real estate report. 'If we were a true empire, we would currently preside over a much greater piece of the earth's surface than we do. That's not the way we operate', he responded. But the Defense Department's 2003 'Base structure report' affirms that the United States currently possesses 702 overseas bases in approximately 130 countries.

Cheney's own musings on empire, alongside his continued defence of the US-led invasion of Iraq and support for an ongoing international war against terror, converge with the sheep-like, flag-waving US mainstream media.
