The suspense is over: North Eugene High School has won a four-year, $900,000 private grant through the Oregon Small Schools Initiative.

Principal Peter Tromba announced the news over the school's public address system soon after getting word by telephone about 11 a.m.

"Most people seemed pretty excited," he said, although the past week's flurry of activity, discussion and debate over the grant has left many staff members emotionally exhausted.

North Eugene was one of eight finalists in the running for a piece of a $25 million statewide grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Meyer Memorial Trust.
