Batavia will be searching for a fifth consecutive varsity girls league championship when the Suburban Prairie North holds its inaugural event, and the Bulldogs' underclass is also full of depth.

Fourteen sophomores and an equal number of freshmen enabled Batavia to win its first three dual meets of the season - all league encounters between Glenbard South, Sycamore and Geneva.

The numbers at the underclass level are particularly impressive considering that several members of the group are important contributors to the varsity program.

"Most of the JV girls are battling for relay spots," said varsity head coach Dennis Piron. "They add nice depth to our team. It's a little bit different between girls and boys because girls usually have a better maturity level when they enter high school."

Charlotte Barry and Jen Heimsath, whom Piron has identified as the top high jumper and hurdler, respectively, highlight the sophomore class for the JV team.

Freshmen Emily Gottshalk (sprinter), Mary Kettering (middle distance), Brittany Trussel (sprinter) and Lisa Berendt (hurdles) represent the Bulldogs' most promising athletes among ninth graders.
