Geneva is playing matches, but for the moment, everything continues to point toward one match - Thursday when the Vikings face Batavia.

Geneva lost 3-2 in overtime to the Bulldogs the first time the teams met.

"That's the game that we're playing for in a way," Geneva coach Marc Nesci said. "Not that we're looking past these other games. But that's a big one for us. Losing that game and losing the way we did fuels our passion."

Despite winning that match, Batavia is still seeded beneath Geneva in the Class AA St. Charles North sectional rankings, which were released this week. St. Charles North is seeded No. 1, Wheaton Warrenville South No. 2, followed by Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles East, respectively.

"I know that's going to fuel them too," Nesci said. "Then again, it's a Geneva-Batavia game and the kids will naturally be up for it."

With a conference schedule that struggles to give Batavia or Geneva sustained competition, other methods must be sought to achieve a strength of schedule....
