Many high school athletes are living through an age of innocence, often unaware that life continues after graduation.

Durrell Williams, 2003's Class AA long jump state runner-up and senior at West Aurora, is not one of them.

"My family doesn't have a lot for college, so I've had to view life as a series of steps," Williams said.

In his freshman year of high school, Williams managed the girls volleyball team under the guidance of then head coach, Christina Tammen.

Williams said Tammen advised him to look toward the future. "She told me to pick a sport that I could get an athletic scholarship in," he said.

"(West Aurora assistant track coach Courtney Lamb) saw me jump 18 feet in gym class," Williams said.

With scholarship potential and expectations high, Williams joined the track team....
