In conference calls with analysts and media this summer, three large distribution/processing companies discussed the strategies they're implementing both for mid-term survival and long-term growth.

"We are concentrating on making Metals USA work as a single entity with common goals for everybody within the company. So far, we have not seen any significant change in the general economy or overall demand for our products. The good news is we are not waiting for the outside environment to improve. We believe that our better [financial] results have been achieved at the expense of our competition," President and CEO Laurenco Goncalves said.

Although revenues declined $6.9 million in the second quarter, vs. the same period in 2002, Metals USA posted $2.3 million in net income, compared with a loss of $7.2 million a year ago. The company, which has 114 locations, emerged from...
