Many books claiming to be encyclopedias of aircraft exist, but all of them fall far short of the mark. A true, accurate encyclopedia of all aircraft may never be published, because the task of gathering accurate information about such a vast subject is far too formidable. However, any attempt to produce such an encyclopedia should begin with Bell's work. While it also is not an encyclopedia, it is an attempt to provide a "single reliable authority for aircraft names and designations."
