William France was laid off about nine months ago and still thinks of his job search as an adventure.
"You need to ask and answer the question: 'What lights me up?'" said the Naperville man, a former leader of the Quality and Control Team for Lucent's Mobility-IN business unit.
Attitude, perseverance and networking are keys - and priorities - when searching for a job, area officials and job seekers say. Yet, that so-called adventure is discouraging for many. Wherever you turn, it seems, more workers are hitting the unemployment rolls.
For example, Lucent Technologies, which has operations in Naperville and Lisle, plans to reduce its total work force to 35,000 by today, including layoffs, early retirements and voluntary resignations.
Nearby Naperville-based Tellabs Inc. is letting 325 workers go on Friday as part of a previously announced plan to close its Bolingbrook plant. In addition, Tellabs is rounding up volunteers to add to that layoff list.
