Although he is a lifelong Cubs fan, Steve Meathe doesn't mind so much when the North Siders lose the occasional game.
Why? Because his fiancee, Katie Slobodzian, wears the same pair of underwear every day the Cubs play. Not different versions of the same model - the same pair.
"I don't wash them until the Cubs lose," Slobodzian says proudly. "I call 'em my 'Lucky Cubbies.'"
She insists her ritual works: "Look how good they're doing this year," says Slobodzian, who lives in Waukegan and works in Vernon Hills. "Do you think that's just a coincidence?"
Meathe shrugs his shoulders in the universal "What can ya do?" sign.
"I'm pretty happy when the Cubs have an off day, let me tell you," says Meathe of Elk Grove Village.
Like Slobodzian, many Cubs fans adhere to superstitions that, they absolutely swear, led the team this year to the postseason for only the fifth time in 58 years. The rituals will be key, super fans contend, to helping the Cubs get past the Atlanta Braves in the...
