...Easterners today, more than 110,000 Japanese Americans and non-citizens of Japanese descent were forced into internment camps. With racism trumping citizenship, Japanese 'non-aliens' were lumped with 'aliens' as the 'sleepers' of their day, who had to be rounded up and contained before they could act. Then, as today, people were detained without any evidence that they actually posed threat to national security or had done anything wrong. Then, as post-September 11, there was little public outcry.

Sixty years after he lost his US Supreme Court challenge to internment on the grounds of racial identity alone, former internee Fred Korematsu stands alongside the relative few who are denouncing arbitrary government actions that target a new generation of 'enemy aliens' in the name of the 'war on terrorism'. Theirs is not an easy task. The Bush administration's penchant for secrecy, combined with anti-Arab racism--long a staple of US popular culture--have made it difficult to get hold of information about the magnitude and particulars of government repression and to get the public to care.
