Hookworm disease, a debilitating and potentially fatal condition, has escaped the fear and fame surrounding the deadly, rapid-killing epidemics of plague, smallpox, cholera, and polio. It has never been considered spectacular the way yellow fever and malaria were. Yet hookworm disease is a much greater menace because it is insidious. It has devastated entire populations and changed the nature of numerous cultures.

The severe anemia induced by the bloodsucking worms can debilitate the victim and cause various serious complications. Among the most common of these are lethargy and apathy, skin ulcers, cardiac decompensation, and edema. Malnutrition and hypovitaminosis aggravate the condition. Severe physical and mental retardation are also common among children who have sustained repeated infection since infancy; they often take on a characteristic emaciated and potbellied appearance.
