SALEM - The state is planning to set up liquor stores inside as many as a half-dozen Oregon grocery stores - one of which could be in Eugene - as a way to boost revenues and make it easier for consumers to buy booze.

The proposal by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission is in the early stages, but a spokesman said the first such "liquor store within a grocery store" could open as soon as October, followed by up to five more such operations over two years.

"At this point, we're trying to see what's going to be a good arrangement for the grocers and what's going to make good economic and public-safety sense around the state," said Jon Stubenvoll, the liquor commission's government relations manager.
