Article Excerpt When Terry Carlisle retired three years ago, he spent a year hunting and fishing with his buddies, who prodded him to help them find land to set up camp.
"I'd never looked for rural land before and it was a nightmare," said Carlisle, former president of Atcon, a business development consulting firm in Birmingham, Ala. "It was so tough because it's a very fragmented business. There was no central point where someone could help you buy and manage hunting land."
Carlisle developed a small network in Alabama called Dreamland Properties, and hit a snag when several clients wanted to buy property in Georgia or Mississippi.
"When you cross state lines, you get into all these regulations with the SEC," he explained. "I couldn't serve my clients the way I wanted to, and to do so, I had to either get smaller or bigger in a big way. I'd had a big company before and didn't want to do that. That's when I stumbled across...
