Mossy Oak Properties helps buyers own rural America: company plans to have 40 offices by year-end.

When Terry Carlisle retired three years ago, he spent a year hunting and fishing with his buddies, who prodded him to help them find land to set up camp.

"I'd never looked for rural land before and it was a nightmare," said Carlisle, former president of Atcon, a business development consulting firm in Birmingham, Ala. "It was so tough because it's a very fragmented business. There was no central point where someone could help you buy and manage hunting land."

Carlisle developed a small network in Alabama called Dreamland Properties, and hit a snag when several clients wanted to buy property in Georgia or Mississippi.
