The region also hosted two events unique in America's military annals--the Texas War of Independence and the last land invasion of the continental U.S. by an enemy force. When it comes to military museums, the Southwest can claim two so special that there are none similar elsewhere. So take a journey spanning five centuries of exciting events.

Arizona Military Museum Phoenix, (602) 267-2676.
More than 25 displays covering arrival of Spanish Conquistadors through Persian Gulf War. Includes Arizona National Guard from 1865 to present, POWs/MIAs and research library.
Canyon de Chelly National Monument Chinle, (928) 674-5500.
Site of Col. Kit Carson's controversial 1863-64 campaign against Navajos. Visitor center, museum focus on Southwestern Indian history.
Fort Bowie National Historic Site Bowie, (520) 847-2500.
Site of July 1862 Battle of Apache Pass between Chiricahua Apaches (led by Cochise) and California Volunteers. Fort established to protect the pass and Apache Spring (vital way-station on Butterfield Overland Trail between St. Louis and San Francisco) from 1862 to 1894, when Apache leader Geronimo surrendered. 1.5-mile foot trail to ruins, visitor center.
Fort Verde State Historic Park Camp Verde, (928) 567-3275.
Served as staging base for military operations in surrounding countryside from 1865 to 1891. Three historic house museums, officer's quarters, interpretive exhibits, living history programs.
