A dream for the disabled
I am a wheelchair user, and have completed both bachelor's and master's degrees in landscape architecture. I coordinate an international network of designers with disabilities, most of whom are architects, with members on five continents and in over 20 states. On Thursday, I posted this message to my design friends who have been following the design critique of our new courthouse, and I'd like to share it with the Eugene-Springfield community:
"On this day, the 40th anniversary of one of the most powerful moments in civil rights history around the world, I would like to echo Martin Luther King's 'I have a dream' speech. Regarding the inequitable access in the newly proposed federal courthouse for Eugene, Ore.:
"I have a dream that one day all of the world's children with disabilities, regardless of physical shape, health, ability, cognitive development or emotional state, will be able to pursue their civil rights in the world's halls of justice through the same pathways and front doors as their nondisabled sisters and brothers. Dream on, dear friends, and expand MLK's dream to include us and all of our loved ones in all the built environments of the world."

I know we (Oregonians) have all been thinking it,...
