Abstract

The purpose of this "Adopt a School" project is to provide organized service activities that identify and provide health and safety programs and services to the top two poverty-stricken elementary schools within the local school district. This project provides opportunities for university students across campus to participate in experiential learning opportunities that impact learning and application of subject content, recognize the complexity of social problems and enhance civic responsibility. Students work with professionals in the field including teachers, support staff, school administrators, health and human services organizations, and community leaders and members. University student's academic and personal development factors are assessed as well as the knowledge base of the elementary students receiving the services.
