Article Excerpt THE THREE BASIC RULES FOR ANY speech are: Start with a laugh, put the meat in the middle, and wave the flag at the end. Most important is to have a rapport with your audience. You can do it several ways. First, speak deliberately. I once had a speech teacher who said, "Gaze around the room, make eye contact, and start slowly, as if you were taking off long, white gloves." You can't do that in a hurry. Then identify with the place you're in: "The last time I was here in Bible, Texas ..." Be aware of the time. The audience always wonders how long they're going to be stuck with you. In the old days, you'd look at your watch and say, "I'm not going to be like Hubert Humphrey."
