Article Excerpt SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- SurfControl (LONDON: SRF) (EUROPE: SRFC) , the world's number one Web and e-mail filtering company, today warned companies to take extra security precautions against "brand spoofing spam," a growing and dangerous type of spam that seeks to defraud e-mail users.
Brand spoofing involves a spammer sending fraudulent email that pretends to be from a well-known and trusted company. The spammer, posing as a customer service or security official, directs the unsuspecting recipient of the spam to a phony Web site. The site then requests confidential financial information or a Social Security number that allows the spammer to commit fraud or identity theft.
Over the last few months, well-known companies who have been "brand spoofed" include Best Buy, UPS, Bank of America, PayPal and First Union Bank.
