PROJECT OVERVIEW:
An Indonesian joint venture was recently established in view of building a new coal-fired power plant in Malaysia. The partners in the planned undertaking and their respective shareholdings include TENAGA NASIONAL BERHAD (TNB - 30%) and GENTING BHD (70%).
The new facility, dubbed SEPANG POWER SDN BHD the company that holds the license for the new unit, is to be sited either on Langkawi Island, in the northern Kedah state or near Kuantan Port in the central Pahang state. Construction plans under consideration call for building a complex with an installed generating capacity of 1,400 Mw.
The cost to complete the project has been pegged at $1,100,000,000 and operational start-up was initially scheduled for some time during the year 2009. However, it could come on stream sooner because of slow progress at another power development scheme.
GENTING employs a total staff of over 14,000 and operates as an investment holding and management company. The group is engaged in leisure and hospitality, plantations, property, paper and packaging, power, oil and gas as well as E-Commerce and IT development.
TNB employs a total workforce of about 23,200 and acts as a holding. The group is involved in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity. Its subsidiaries are active in the manufacture, sale and repair of transformers and switchgear as...
