Joe Donovan retired as chief of the Milford/Miami Township, Ohio, fire department while in his mid 30's. He had been in some form of emergency care service since 1975 during his days as a biology and microbiology student -- and later graduate -- at the University of Cincinnati, What now, he wondered?

A Seattle suburb interviewed him for their fire chief position, but that was the same old thing. At the Seattle Airport, he struck up a conversation with an American Medical Response (AMR) consultant and they discussed a possible position for Donovan. The guy called and asked about Donovan's interest in taking over the Jackson AMR office. Response: "Forget it, and don't call me back." The guy persevered.

As a result, Donovan flew into Gulfport where AMR was buying Mobile Medic, an emergency medical service that was run by John Rester. Both of them were retiring as presidents of...
