On a typical day, Pi Irwin's schedule would consist of staff meetings, writing reports, school visits and PTA appearances.
Soon, Irwin's itinerary will shift to bird watching, hiking, cooking and, most importantly, spending time with her husband, Jerry Parks.
After 10 years as superintendent of Glen Ellyn School District 41, Irwin, 61, is retiring today.
The new superintendent, Jack Barshinger, will take over Tuesday.
"I feel as if I've been part of writing one chapter in the district's history and Jack will begin writing another chapter," Irwin said.
"I do believe strongly in public school education and I do believe we can be the best of the best, and District 41 is well on its way."
Roots in education
As a little girl, Irwin knew she wanted to go into education. Her younger brothers, Thomas and Gerald, knew, too.
"One of my earliest memories was making them attend my school," Irwin recalled.
