Naperville newsmakers discuss issues of the day

As Naperville has grown in leaps and bounds, so have its churches.

Though they may be of different denominations, the pastors share some of the same experiences and challenges.

Staff Writer Beth Sneller talked with the leaders of a few of Naperville's largest churches to find out what's on their minds these days.

The Rev. David Ferguson is the lead pastor of Community Christian Church, a four-campus non-denominational church. The Rev. Gregory Wenhold is co-senior pastor at Good Shepherd Church, a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. The Rev. James Nowak is pastor at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, the oldest Roman Catholic church in DuPage County and a landmark in downtown Naperville.

Can you give us a brief description of your church and how it became so large?

The Rev. Dave Ferguson: Our church has locations in Naperville, Romeoville, Oswego and Plainfield.

We say our mission is to help people back to God. God kind of partners with us; what he does is kind of serendipitous, a surprise. On our side of the equation, we try to be faithful and we're trying to constantly reproduce new believers and new small groups.

What comes next is new congregations and even new churches.

We've been around for 14 years. I don't know what our membership is, but we have about 3,200 people there on a weekend.

The Rev. Greg Wenhold: Good Shepherd comes out of a traditional Evangelical Lutheran Church of America background, but we call ourselves Christian with a Lutheran perspective. We've been around for about 14 years.

We're doing pretty much the same thing Community Christian is doing: we are looking for those lost people who want to find Jesus Christ. That's our passion.
