Three heart attacks and two bouts with breast cancer have not kept Marge Cline and Fran Almquist from their love of paddling.

Both women have mastered their canoes and kayaks down rivers, streams and white water, while weathering illnesses, divorce and family tragedies.

Perhaps their love of paddle sports has taught them that you have to navigate through rough water, around rocks, know when to let the currents carry you and when to paddle vigorously - as well as be willing to portage boat and gear up steep cliffs - in order to experience the pure and simple beauty of life.

Next month, the two women will share their knowledge and love at Paddling in the Park at the Twin Lakes Recreation Area in Palatine, a two-day canoeing and kayaking festival...
