...elements acquiring the thin-film platinum sensor product line from the Temperature Sensor Division ABB Automation Products GmbH (Alzenau, Germany), known as Sensycon. The business unit, formerly known as Sensycon, was renamed Heraeus Sensor Technology GmbH.

The merger of Heraeus Sensor-Nite and Sensycon was successfully completed, and the former Sensycon business unit was successfully integrated into Heraeus Sensor-Nite. As of July 1, 2003, Heraeus Sensor-Nite will immediately operate under the name Heraeus Sensor Technology under the management of Dr. Martin Turwitt.

"We are pleased that the integration of the two companies has been accomplished so rapidly," stated Dr. Turwitt, managing director of Heraeus Sensor Technology GmbH. "Our customers will benefit from an extended product portfolio and our integrated expertise in sensor technology at the high level of quality to which they are accustomed."

As a result of the purchase of the ABB/Sensycon thin-film platinum RTD product line last autumn, Heraeus Sensor also entered into a relationship with an independent sales organization--DWM Associates, Inc. (North Brunswick, NJ, 732-940-4400)(www.dwmai.com), which is now the exclusive U.S. and Canadian distributor for Heraeus Sensor Technology's line of platinum RTD temperature sensors (including those made by the former Heraeus Sensor-Nite and the former ABB Sensycon temperature sensors). DWM Associates has amassed over ten years experience in temperature sensor technology. Originating from the former Degussa Temperature Sensing Division, DWM Associates previously distributed and served as the representative of the ABB/Sensycon line of temperature sensors.

The former ABB business unit reportedly manufactures over two million thin-film platinum RTDs per year. Major applications in North America for the former ABB Sensycon thin thin-film PRTD elements include temperature measurement devices used in such areas as chemical processing, analytical instruments, appliances, and aviation. In 2001, the former ABB business unit had global revenues of 4.3 million euro (approximately $4.9 million at the current exchange rate).

The former ABB Sensycon business unit's offerings particularly reinforce Heraeus' thin-film platinum temperature sensor offerings in the range up to +400 degrees C through, for example, inexpensive and soft-solderable devices with silver-palladium wires. Moreover, the former Sensycon product line includes additional resistance temperature sensors with gold-palladium wires and in different geometries for temperatures up to 600 degrees C.

"On the one hand, the acquisition of the platinum thin-film business unit of ABB means for us a clear extension of our highly automated manufacturing-we now have a 2" and a 4"production line-and on the other an international strengthening of our sales organization, especially in the USA," noted Dr. Turwitt at the time of the acquisition.

David Molnar, president of DWM Associates, noted that thin-film platinum RTDs have key growth opportunities in, for example, the automotive market, which is looking for temperature sensor elements that can withstand higher temperatures up to 1000 degrees C. He...
