To increase profitability in the face of rising energy and raw material costs and lackluster aluminum demand, Alcoa Inc. has announced temporary smelter capacity cutbacks and workforce reductions.

The 230,000 metric tonnes of planned capacity reductions brings the Pittsburgh-based company's total idled capacity to 675,000 tonnes, out of a total worldwide rated capacity of 3.9 million tonnes.

G. John Pizzey, executive vice president of Alcoa and group president of primary products, told analysts April 23 that these moves are part of the company's strategy to reposition its assets--closing older, higher cost smelters and refineries and replacing...
