Propelled by stronger buying patterns from all end-user markets, higher shipments and prices, a half-dozen metals distributors and processors saw their first-quarter revenues and income bounce back dramatically from a year ago.

Chicago-based Ryerson Tull Inc.'s revenues rose 28.6 percent from the first quarter of 2003, on a 13.2 percent increase in shipments and a 13.6 percent increase in the average selling price per ton. Gross profit per ton improved 10.5 percent.

"We have managed well in a rapidly rising price environment, enabling us to maintain gross profits with our large OEM customers while continuing to offer competitive prices on our transactional [spot market] business," said Neil S. Novich, the company's chairman, president and CEO.
