Hold state officials accountable

Thousands of Oregonians have been downsized from our jobs over the past several years. We have had to make smaller budgets and live within our incomes. Some of us are still not working. Some have had to change professions. Some, because of age, are forced into retirement early. All have been forced into cutting nonessential expenses. It wasn't easy, but we made the necessary choices.

You and I have to live within our budgets, and the governor and legislators must do so also. They must cut out the nonessentials. Our governor and legislators applied for their respective jobs by promising to spend our tax money wisely for the best interests of the state. That is their job. That is what they get paid to do. I see them breaking their promises by promoting the cutting of essentials such as schools, police and health programs.

Regarding state Rep. Jeff Kruse's July 22 guest viewpoint, legislators cannot determine what is nonessential. They are too concerned with appeasing their benefactors. If they are not going to live up to the standards required to budget our money for our best interests, they should be voted out and replaced by responsible individuals. The governor and legislators must be held accountable for the promises they made to us when they ran for their offices.
