Article Excerpt
Wireless sensing networks have been generating keen interest and excitement because they can be more easily and cost-effectively installed, deployed, and reconfigured than sensors with a physical wire connection. Wireless sensor networks can benefit numerous applications, where it is inconvenient, inefficient, dangerous, difficult, or expensive to deploy wired sensors.

The adoption and proliferation of wireless sensor networks, which allows for more readily and effectively obtaining measurements of a greater variety of sensed parameters, has, historically, been somewhat impeded by the lack of a standard for wireless communications that is optimized for sensors. Moreover, the expansion of networked wireless sensors will be driven by the advent and proliferation of low-power, very compact, highly versatile transceivers for sending and receiving sensor data.

The IEEE 802.15.4 standard for low data rate, low-power wireless communications is expected to boost opportunities for wireless sensing applications. Radios adhering to 802.15.4 (which uses a spread spectrum technique for transmitting information via radio signals) are expected to be released this year.
