The Material Works Ltd. (TMW) and Red Bud Industries Inc. have teamed up on a surprising new hot-rolled strip cleaning, stretcher leveling and cut-to-length system that claims to produce hot-rolled blanks with the flatness of tempered steel, the corrosion resistance of pickled and oiled, and the paintability of cold-rolled, at a fraction of the cost.

In 1999, toll processor TMW began conceptualizing a system to clean hot-rolled black steel. Hot-rolled black is low-end commodity steel that typically undergoes further processing, such as cold-rolling, pickling and oiling or galvanizing, to remove the surface scale and give it the corrosion resistance and smoothness necessary for painting when formed into parts.
