Investors prefer quick wins to military quagmires

Jonathan Hartman, an analyst with RBC Investments, has analyzed the stock market's performance following 16 American military engagements and four other investment-disrupting foreign events. In a recent RBC newsletter, Mr. Hartman reports that "the briefest and least severe corrections [always] followed events where the U.S. determined the timing." Since Saddam Hussein certainly did not control timing on the American incursion into Iraq, those research results seem to bode well for share prices now.

The IMF says the Iraqi campaign had little economic impact

The International Monetary Fund expects global economic growth to be a reasonably healthy 3.2% this year. Horst Koehler, managing director of the Washington, D.C.-based organization, believes the Iraqi war has inflicted only modest damage but warns that many countries were in weakened financial shape even before the conflict broke out.
