...into provincial (and municipal) jurisdictions. Our provincial governments are tantalized by federal handouts which, in the short term, seem attractive. By the time we realize what has occurred, we are subservient; it is too late.

Western Canadians have, on more than one occasion, attempted to realign and rebalance the federal system, but it is far too heavily weighted to Ontario and Quebec to offer much hope. While various prime ministers have manipulated the system to garner unfettered power into the hands of a few, we taxpayers have "slept through the movie." Surely the Fathers of Confederation never envisioned such power and might being placed into the hands of one single prime minister. Yet it has happened.

For change to be made, the provinces must re-establish their original lines of authority, and federal incursions into

provincial affairs must stop.

Refederate or separate!

Re: "Chretien, Canada's uncrowned monarch," (March 3). Canada is the best country in the world with the worst government. It is our federal Constitution that breeds this type of government.
