J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, is now richer than Queen Elizabeth II, according to an annual Sunday Times survey of Britain's wealthiest people. The 37-year-old former welfare recipient has a fortune worth about C$645 million. The Queen's fortune is worth an estimated C$575 million, placing her 11 slots behind the author on the British "Rich List." Ms. Rowling has sold over 190 million copies of her children's books and is now the richest female author in the world.

A remarkably budgeted reserve construction project in northern Manitoba has been criticized for government mismanagement by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF). In 1972, a political fracas prompted a split in the Colomb Cree band, and the government later agreed to build a new reserve for the rebel faction. In the meantime, the dissidents have been living in Lynn Lake, an isolated town where real estate values have been permanently shattered by a mine closure.
