Car-repair charges can be grotesquely high

The Automobile Protection Association has published its latest car-repair survey, and the results are not reassuring. Its survey procedure involves carefully servicing a car, ensuring that its only problem is a loose battery cable. The association took that vehicle to 51 service-repair facilities located in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver. Overall, 25 of those garages identified the extremely minor problem and repaired it at a reasonable cost. Among the others, Canadian Tire and Sears facilities fared the worst, with their Calgary outlets charging $620 and $1,240 respectively.

The U.S. Energy Information Agency reports that natural gas in storage is currently more than 50% below five-year average levels for this time of year. (The storage inventory currently stands at 600 billion cubic feet.) North America depends on its storage capacity of about three trillion cubic feet to keep gas prices steady during periods of peak demand. If weather this summer is relatively cool, fuel demand for air conditioning should be modest and gas producers will be able to replenish their low storage inventory. But...
