April 10 of this year was one of the worst days of Wally Glimm's life. After listening that afternoon to a judge rule on his divorce settlement with his estranged wife, Bobi Zadow, the 53-year-old farmer from Leduc, Alta., left the courtroom effectively homeless.
The ruling evicted him from the 80-acre farm which had been in his family for three generations. The property was to be sold, and the proceeds put into trust to be divided up. The judge had then ordered him off the farm, agreeing with his estranged wife's lawyer that he might interfere with the sale. On his way home to pack up, his cellphone rang. "Don't go home," his friend told him. "You'd better come over to my place." Ten RCMP cars were patrolling his property; two police helicopters circled overhead.
How, he wondered, had things come to this awful pass? Mr. Glimm and his estranged wife disagree on many things, but there is one fact neither disputes: she left him after 27 years of marriage. "She woke up one day," he says, "threw her legs over the...
