Concerned citizens seek single women, willing to believe in themselves and in power of the vote. Should care about education, health costs, environment, jobs. No political party preference required. You register with us!
Women - especially single young women - are drawing a lot of attention in and around Eugene these days. It's their status as unregistered voters that has multiple groups vying for their attention in a high-stakes, every-vote-counts election season.
At least four distinct groups are working to get more local women to register to vote or, if already registered, to promise to actually vote.
Holly Knight was making phone calls for the effort, and one woman who answered said it was her third such call this month. "I told her, `That's because your vote is so important,' ' said Knight, who's involved with 1,000 Flowers, a group placing voter registration materials inside the several Eugene beauty salons involved in the campaign.
This will be 24-year-old Joan Finn's first time voting in a presidential election. "I don't think you have a right to complain if you haven't done something to change things," the Eugene woman said. "And as a woman, when you think of all those years fighting...
